Committee members have compiled a wide range of researched information into a variety of illnesses, conditions and diseases. A number of Information Binders (files) containing this material are placed within the waiting area of the Surgery with an invitation to all patients and professionals to feel free to browse.
There are 3 additional binders specifically aimed at:
Assisting patients access help from Social Services
Information regarding Cancer and its treatment
General healthy well-being
There is an Index to the binders giving easy access to the topic being researched together with an Address Book, which gives contact details to organisations, voluntary groups and other health related institutions.
In addition, a rack has been installed containing free leaflets, booklets and brochures.
The Primary Care Trust has noted and commended the vast quantity of information available within the Surgery.
Hillingdon's Assembly for Older People
This is an initiative which came out of the "Your Voice" older people's conference held in June 2000, and open Assemblies are held quarterly at the Civic Centre. The PPG (Patient Participation Group) has an elected representative who sits on a monthly committee to debate and wherever possible deal with topics raised at the Assemblies and more importantly is able to raise any concerns brought to the attention of the PPG. This committee is known as FORCe (Fifties and Over Representative Committee).
The first meeting of FORCe was held in January 2001 and achievements to date include:
Putting "Better Government for Older People" into practice
New political management proposals for
Hillingdon Council
Meeting with the Benefit Agency
Community Safety (Crime)
Health and access to Health and Social
Care Services
Successful lobbying for the continuation
of the 331 Bus Route, which in some cases is the only means (other than taxis)
to get to our Surgery.
The repair of potholes in Acre Way-approach
to the Health Centre.
Personal contact with relevant departments
at the LBH, e.g. gritting of approach roads and car park.
Highlighting the closure of public toilets
in the borough.
The Public Panel
The Public Panel was formed under the auspices of the Community Health Council. Members of local organisation and individual members of the public were asked to volunteer to be on the Panel. Until this year, the monthly meetings were held in the CHC building but have now moved to Mount Vernon Hospital. They are attended by an average of 8 - 10 people who discuss any subject concerned with primary and sometimes Tertiary health care. The North Hillingdon Public Panel has discussed subjects as varied as computer costs and the lack of proper feeding in hospitals. A report of each meeting, together with any recommendations, is taken to the following North Hillingdon Locality Directorate Executive team meeting by one of the two lay members. From time to time, speakers from the local health Authority and the Primary Care Trust are invited to speak to, and discuss with the Panel, matters concerning local health care in its broadest sense.
With all the changes taking
place within the NHS, the future of the Public Panel is uncertain, but it
is hoped that there will continue to be a forum through which members of the
public can influence, in some way, the healthcare within the locality.
